Which famous person’s death has had the most impact?

In The News Which Famous Persons Death Has Had The Most Impact
The death of Princess Diana continues to be the most poignant, even after all this time.

Research carried out by OnePoll asked 1,000 people aged 50 and above which famous person’s passing, excluding the death of Queen Elizabeth, impacted them the most and why.

The survey commissioned by pre-paid funeral plan provider, Ecclesiastical Planning Services, has revealed that the death of Princess Diana continues to be the most poignant, even after all this time.

Of the 225 respondents, 24% named the late Princess. The reasons were varied with some people stating that they loved and admired her for her caring approach and charitable work. Some commented that she was so young, with her whole life ahead of her and her young sons to live for. Then others found the violent and shocking nature of her passing traumatic. One person commented that she was “dearly loved and iconic throughout the world”.

The second most common answer given by 7% of respondents, was David Bowie. Many were fans who were inspired by his music, performances and charisma. The unexpected news of his passing was also a factor for some.

John Lennon and Freddie Mercury were popular answers too, with respondents stating that both ‘died too young’ and were immensely talented. The next most noteworthy loss was that of American President, John F. Kennedy, following his assassination in 1963. The following were also noted – Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh, Winston Churchill, Victoria Wood, Nelson Mandela, Elvis, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman, Terry Pratchett, Michael Jackson and George Michael.

It’s interesting to analyse the reasons why people are so affected by these losses. Aside from natural talent or wit, in others words, likeable characters, it tends to be those that are admired and who epitomise outstanding values. Some of those listed were noted because they were genuine in their charitable efforts and humanitarian outlook. This tells us that how we conduct ourselves in life is remembered long after we are gone.

It’s also interesting to note that dying wishes and funeral arrangements were highlighted by some. One person commented that Terry Pratchet wrote a superb lecture on why assisted dying is vital. Another respondent mentioned that whilst they were not a fan of David Bowie, there was so much information about his funeral in the news that they developed an interest.

Of course, many of us think our loved ones, whether they are family, friends or the infamous, will go on forever. It’s sobering to realise this is not the case. As a pre-paid funeral plan provider, we encourage people to consider planning ahead, which can be as simple as discussing funeral wishes. Terms and conditions apply – please ask us for details.
