Your quick guide to buying a funeral plan

There are so many funeral plans and funeral plan providers in the UK that it can be difficult to know which is best for you. To help make sure you choose a plan that meets your needs, we’ve answered the questions we are most commonly asked of our pre-paid funeral plans below.

For more information, please call us on 0800 055 6503.

Q. What happens to my money?

Our funeral plans offer exceptional financial security. Every penny of the full value of your plan (excluding the initial management fee) is held securely in a whole of life assurance policy and ring-fenced to pay for your funeral when the time comes.

To hold the pre-payment funds, we only work with UK-based life assurance companies that are authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and regulated by the PRA and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Funeral plans themselves are not regulated by the PRA or FCA but we, as the plan provider, are registered with the Funeral Planning Authority and adhere to its strict Code of Practice.

Q. Who is eligible?

Anyone aged 18 or over can take out one of our plans. There’s no upper age limit and no medical or health questions to answer.

Q. Does the plan allow me to choose the funeral director?

Yes – our funeral plan allows you to select any accredited funeral directing firm.

Q. Can the plan include special wishes?

You can add special wishes and requests such as song choices, readings, information for a eulogy and so on. There is no charge to add these details. There may be more to pay if you require additional features, services or upgrades.

Q. Can I change my funeral plan arrangements?

Yes, you can make changes to your plan after you have taken it out. Just let your funeral director know what you’d like to change. There may be an additional cost if you add new features or services to your plan.

Q. What happens if my chosen funeral director goes out of business?

We work with funeral directors throughout the UK, so you should be able to transfer your plan to an accredited funeral director near your new home, however there may be more to pay depending on local prices.

Q. What happens if I move to a different part of the country?

We work with funeral directors throughout the UK, so you should be able to transfer your plan to an accredited funeral director near your new home. There may be additional costs depending on local prices, but you will be advised of this at the time.

Q. Can I buy a funeral plan for someone else?

Yes. We find that many people choose to do this.

Q. Can I pay for my plan by instalments?

Yes, you can choose to pay over 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 years. There is an additional cost if you pay over 2, 3, 4, or 5 years. This additional cost is held within the plan and used for the funeral at the time of need. In addition to the usual Funeral Plan Terms and ConditionsAdditional Instalment Payment Terms and Conditions apply.

Q. What happens if I pay by instalments and need to cancel future payments?

If you choose to pay by monthly instalments and you wish to stop paying, you can either cancel the plan and receive a refund of the money you have paid minus the management fee, or you can leave what you have paid in the plan to be used as a contribution to your funeral when the time comes.

If your plan is needed before you have completed your instalments, the payments you have made will be used as a contribution to your funeral.

Q. Is the plan guaranteed to cover the entire cost of the funeral?

The plan covers the funeral director’s costs as specified in the plan paperwork. Most of our plans include a contribution towards third party fees such as doctor’s and minister’s fees (known as disbursements). These are outside of the funeral director’s control and therefore cannot be guaranteed. Please see our Funeral Plan Terms and Conditions for more information.

Q. Can I cancel my funeral plan?

Yes, you can cancel your plan at any time. If you choose to cancel the plan within 30 days of purchase, you’ll receive a full refund. If you cancel the plan after the first 30 days, you’ll receive a refund of the original amount paid, minus the management fee.
